How to Epoxy a River Table

We recently came across some rustic oak flooring. It has a lot of knots and cracks in it, but it is perfect for making a river table. If you follow the steps laid out below, you can make a similar table for yourself!

Make the Top

Make the Top

Glue the rustic oak pieces to ¾" plywood and cut the board to the round tabletop shape.

Seal Knots

Seal Knots

Mix ~4 oz Tabletop Epoxy and brush it into all knot holes and across the surface/edges to minimize bubbles; let cure.

Build a Form & Mix Epoxy

Build a Form & Mix Epoxy

Build a ring form (CNC cut), line with Tyvek tape and seal seams with silicone. Mix Upstart Deep Pour at 2:1 (resin:hardener) — ~70 oz total — and add Forest Green metallic mica + Chameleon mica; mix thoroughly.

Pour

Pour

Fill knots first, then pour around the edge to create the epoxy edge. Use heat to pop bubbles; if the board floats, place a Tyvek-wrapped board + weight on top. Let cure for a couple days.

Flatten & Shape

Flatten & Shape

Remove from the form, flatten on the CNC, then round-over the edges with a ¼" router bit.

Sand

Sand

Sand (120 → 220 → 400), wipe with denatured alcohol.

Seal

Seal

Apply a small seal coat of Tabletop Epoxy (a few ounces) and let cure overnight.

Gloss

Gloss

Then apply a flood/gloss coat across the top and edges, pop bubbles with heat, trim cured drips with an orbital sander.
